About 25,000 Ukrainians have arrived in Spain since Russia launched an attack on Ukraine on February 24, although only 9,000 of them have been registered by the authorities so far, Spanish Immigration Minister Jose Luis Eskriva said today.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates that nearly 3.5 million Ukrainians have fled the country, with more than two million fleeing to neighboring Poland.
Romania, Hungary and Slovakia also host large numbers of refugees.
In Spain, which is far from the conflict, many of the Ukrainians who have arrived there live with relatives or friends and have not yet informed authorities, Eskriva said.
“We have extended the residence permit to include all people living in Ukraine at the time of the invasion, not just Ukrainians,” he told the Spanish public news network TVE.
Eskriva said he expects about 9,000 more refugees to register with the Spanish authorities this week and receive temporary EU protection that will allow them to obtain immediate residence and work permits in the country.
Ukrainians are free to enter the EU without a visa but need a residence permit to stay.
