About 5,000 people and 1,000 cars left the northeastern Ukrainian town of Sumy on Tuesday, according to the deputy head of the Ukrainian presidential office, Kirill Timoshenko.
Timoshenko made the announcement via social media. He also posted a video showing people leaving during evacuations.
THE CNN failed to independently verify Timoshenko’s evacuation statistics.
Sumy has experienced heavy attacks in recent days and is almost isolated from the rest of the country. About 21 people were killed in the city in an airstrike on Monday night.
A tense and fleeting evacuation from Sumy took place on Tuesday, with civilians fleeing in private cars and buses carrying people to Poltava, about 100 miles away in central Ukraine, according to Dmytro Lunin, head of Poltava’s regional administration.
