In an interview with CNN Brazil This Thursday (16), the executive director of Ipam André Guimarães declared that the absence of the Brazilian State on the borders of the Amazon region creates an environment conducive to crime.
“One of the central problems in the Amazon is illegality and criminality as a whole. We have the permanence of illegal logging activity, illegal and criminal mining on indigenous lands, land grabbing that moves hundreds of millions of reais, including money laundering”, he highlighted.
“We are talking about borders where drug and arms trafficking permeate. So unfortunately the region, due to its difficulties of access and lack of inspection, ends up having this type of illegal activity favored, which presupposes an even greater action by the State”, he added.
Guimarães stressed that the case of the disappearance of the English journalist Dom Phillips and the Brazilian indigenist Bruno Araújo Pereira is part of a process that has been repeated for decades.
“It is something that happens on a daily basis in the Amazon. Hundreds of people are murdered, threatened, intimidated in the exercise of their professions. A work, in the case of Dom and Bruno, of alerting society, the work of a journalist and an indigenist, who were there to get to know, understand and make us understand the importance of Brazilian indigenous peoples and were brutally murdered,” he said.
“A very sad situation that reveals the need for more efficient action by the Brazilian State, where it should be present”, he concluded.
