Abu Dhabi opens cultural district in 2025 with Guggenheim and national museum

The emirate of Abu Dhabi hit the hammer and announced this Wednesday (22) that the Saadiyat Cultural District located on an island at the edge of the waters of the Persian Gulf, will be completed in 2025 .

Four new museums and cultural centers are being built in the district, which is 10 minutes from the city center and 20 minutes from Abu Dhabi International Airport. Currently, 76% of the works of new cultural institutions are ready.

One of the most anticipated openings is the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi which will be the main museum of modern and contemporary art in the region, with works from the 1960s to the present day.

“The Saadiyat Cultural District serves as a platform for global art and artists and includes a spotlight on Brazil. The work 'Bicho Pan-Cubismo', 1960, by Lygia Clark, is part of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi's permanent collection”, says Mohamed Al Mubarak , chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism.

The collection consists of more than 650 works from more than 100 countries. Designed by architect Frank Gehry , the museum has 28 galleries and a gross area of ​​80 thousand m², establishing itself as the largest of the Guggenheim museums. Currently, in addition to the headquarters in New York, there is The Peggy Guggenheim Collection, in Venice, and the Guggenheim Bilbao, in Bilbao, Spain.
