Ação da Cidadania launches document with 92 proposals to fight hunger

A document with 92 proposals to fight hunger and food insecurity in Brazil was released this Thursday (23), in Rio de Janeiro. The launch takes place during the National Meeting Against Hunger, which brings together 27 entities, such as Citizenship Action, the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Named “Agenda Betinho”, in allusion to sociologist Herbert de Souza, the project will be sent to all candidates for the presidency of the Republic.

Almost 30 years after sociologist Betinho launched a national campaign against hunger, when the country had 32 million people below the poverty line, the scenario is repeated in the country, now with 33 million without food, according to data. of the Brazilian Research Network on Sovereignty and Food Security.

It is in this context that Ação da Cidadania, created by Betinho, decided to launch the document. “The candidate who does not look at hunger as a priority issue is completely disconnected from the reality of Brazil. You can no longer deny hunger, it is not an isolated thing in the corners of the Northeast, the view is that it is everywhere, it has spread in a very serious way”, said Rodrigo “Kiko” Afonso, executive director of Ação da Cidadania .

“And we voters have to look at all candidates, like senators and deputy. Many of the public policies implemented come from Congress,” he added.

Among the proposals presented in the document are the exemption of basic food items, the facilitation of the distribution of fruits and vegetables, especially for families with severe food insecurity, the strengthening of family farming and the expansion of the budget for school meals.

“It’s also a look at what kind of food is being consumed. We have to reduce subsidies and incentives for the consumption of ultra-processed foods while there is no incentive for organic and healthy ones”, evaluates Afonso.

This is the second edition of “Agenda Betinho”. The first was launched in 2020 considering municipal elections. Focusing on the October election, this year’s was built by Ação da Cidadania with the participation of researchers, farmers, riverside dwellers, quilombolas and indigenous people.

The 2022 document also brings an unprecedented initiative with the suggestion of public policies by regions of Brazil, coming from the State Food and Nutrition Security Councils, bodies in which civil society participates in the debate on public policies in the sector.

“What is needed in the North region may not make sense for the South region, for example”, said the executive director of Ação da Cidadania.
