Access of young blacks to high school is a decade behind compared to whites

Young black and brown people are ten years behind white students in accessing and completing high school in the country. This is what a survey by Todos Pela Educação shows, based on IBGE data, between 2012 and 2022.

The information collected shows that in 2012, 73% of young whites aged 15 to 17 attended or completed high school. Level only rising for blacks now in 2022 when the group reached just over 73%.

On the other hand, in the last ten years the inequality between whites and blacks enrolled in high school has fallen from around 20 percentage points to 10 points.

The technical note also shows that only six out of ten 19-year-old black youths completed high school in the country.

In this group, the completion rate has doubled in the last ten years. Going from 32 to 61%. Even so, the current rate is lower than that of young whites in 2012.

In the general panorama, including all students, it is worth noting that Brazil has made progress in accessing and completing secondary education.

The number of students aged 15 and 17 who were enrolled or had already completed their studies rose from 63.5% in 2012 to almost 77% in 2022.

Among 19-year-olds, 50.4% had completed the stage in 2012. The number rose to 67.3% in 2022.
