An accident on the Irineu Penteado Highway (SP-191), in Ipeúna, a city located 20 kilometers from São Carlos, in the interior of São Paulo, left at least four people dead and six injured on the morning of this Monday (8).
According to the State Civil Defense, at around 5:28 am there was a collision between a bus and a minibus at kilometer 93 of the highway. The accident caused the area to be closed in both directions of the road.
In a statement, the Public Security Secretariat (SSP) reported that teams from the Military Highway Police and Fire Department, as well as the highway concessionaire, Eixo SP, are working at the site.
Civil Defense reported that the injured victims were rescued and taken to the Municipal Hospital of Ipeúna, to the Santa Casa Hospital of Rio Claro and to the Emergency Room of Charqueada.
Between 2017 and 2023, Brazil recorded 778 deaths involving bus and minibus accidents on federal highways, according to a survey by the Federal Highway Police (PRF). The data shows that, every week, at least two people die in accidents of this type.
