The latest fatal accident occurred on Thursday in the Cuneo area: a 59-year-old man was overwhelmed by a very heavy load and lost his life. Accidents at work are tragically numerous. 2023 has started in the worst way: in the first few months there have already been over 86,000 accidents at work: over 200 people lost their lives in the first months of the yearfive in the space of 24 hours just a few days ago, including a 25-year-old who died in Milan during his first day of work in a textile company.

Last year, in Italy, there were 697,773 injuries at work, according to data released by Inail. A provisional number pending the mid-year Annual Report which will include the consolidated analysis of the trend in occupational accidents and diseases in the five-year period 2018-2022.

It is, unfortunately, about a growing trenda, with an increase of 25.7% compared to 2021, 25.9% compared to 2020 and 8.7% compared to 2019. On the other hand, deaths at work are down, but the decrease is due to the lower number of deaths related to Covid cases of professional origin. Only 10 deaths caused by Covid in 2022 against 294 in 2021 with a drop of -96.6%. While on the one hand these data seem encouraging due to the lesser danger of the pandemic, on the other hand they bring the numbers back to pre-Covid levels and confirm the inability to reduce the phenomenon of deaths at work.

«Numbers that invite attention to be paid in Italy too», explains HSE advisor and coach Tommaso Barone. «Safety at work is a concept that concerns culture and education. Spreading the culture of safety in the workplace is essential and investing increasingly important resources on this issue becomes a duty. A safe workplace brings tangible improvement to the working environment and climate, without forgetting the important psychophysical well-being of employees. Teamwork is a trump card for a company, the goal to be achieved must be the same for all parties involved in the awareness that a safe workplace guarantees considerable advantages. With a virtuous and enlightened approach, an employer can guarantee serious and motivated employees».
