Acre: see who are the pre-candidates for the state government and the Senate

The governor of Acre, Gladson Cameli (PP)should seek re-election and could face the former governor at the polls Jorge Viana (PT), which in the late 1990s inaugurated a period of PT hegemony in the state. Since Viana’s election as governor in 1998, the PT has been in power for nearly 20 years. The legend was only evicted in 2018, precisely with the victory of the current governor.

The names that will run in the October elections can still change because the parties have until August 5 to nominate their candidates through conventions, according to the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) calendar.

A survey of CNN Brazil points out at least five names that should run for governor.

Candidates for State Government

Cameli is a civil engineer, graduated from Ulbra (Lutheran Institute of Higher Education in Manaus). Nephew of former governor Orleir Cameli (1995-1998), he entered the public career in 2007, when he was elected federal deputy, holding the position for two consecutive terms, until 2015.

He also held the position of senator, where he remained for another four years, between 2015 and 2018. In the last general elections, he was elected governor in the first round, with 53.71% of the valid votes. Candidate Marcus Alexandre, chosen by the PT to try to keep Acre as the party’s electoral stronghold, obtained 34.54% of the votes, and was in second place.

Now, the Workers’ Party can bet on the return of Jorge Viana. A forestry engineer, he was born in Rio Branco and started his political career as mayor of the state capital in 1993. Between 1999 and 2007, he was governor of Acre and, between 2011 and 2019, senator. In 2018, he failed to be re-elected to the Senate, and ended the election in third position, with 14.74% of valid votes. Despite having confirmed his pre-candidacy, he has not yet indicated whether he will be a candidate for state government or the Senate.

already the senator Sergio Petecão (PSD), which has a term of office until 2027, confirmed its intention to run for the head of the Executive. Entrepreneur and accounting technician, he was state deputy from 1995 to 2007, having been president of the Legislative Assembly of Acre from 1999 to 2007. He also had a term as federal deputy (2007 to 2011) before becoming a senator for the first time, in 2011 . Currently, he is serving his second term, having obtained 30.71% of the valid votes in 2018.

The race for government may also have Janilson Leite (PSB), known as Dr. Jenilson. He is an infectious disease physician trained at Elam (Escuela Latinoamericana de Medicina), in Havana, Cuba. Despite being a party member since 2005, he was elected to his first public office as a state deputy in the 2014 elections, and is currently in his second term.

Lastly, David Hall (Citizenship), who also ran in 2018, at the time for Avante, should be a candidate. Graduated in philosophy from the Federal University of Acre, he works as a professor. In the last elections, he did not receive 1% of the valid votes.

Senate

For the Senate, the vacancy that currently belongs to Mailza Gomes (PP). She can seek re-election. Former first lady of the municipality of Senador Guiomard, Mailza was an alternate for Gladson Camelli and assumed the position of senator for Acre in 2019 when the incumbent Gladson Camelli took office as governor.

Jorge Viana (PT) can run for the Senate if he does not confirm his candidacy for state government.

the federal deputy Jessica Sales (MDB) is considered as a likely candidate for the Senate by Acre.
