Among the fans of this style of yoga there is Jelena Djokovic, who often practices it with her husband Novak Djokovic, number 1 tennis player in the ATP world rankings. Not by chance the couple is one of the most solid and close-knit in the sports firmament. Is exactly strengthening confidence in others is one of the benefits that acrobatic yoga brings with it. But what is it about and what is it good for?
What is acroyoga
Born in America frommeeting between yoga, acrobatics and Thai Massage, acroyoga is a sequence of asanas (positions) devised by Americans Jason Nemer and Jenny Sauer-Klein.
It is performed, in fact, in pairs and allows you to “fly” thanks to the calibrated movements of those who support and those who are supported. Listening to your own body and that of your partner is essential to find balance and get in tune. Of course there are various levels as well the basic one can also be practiced by children.
How it is done
It is performed, as mentioned, in pairs and in practice requires the presence of three figures. On the ground is the person who acts as the host base and supports the other person, the flyer, which moves in the air. Outside the couple lies the spotter, usually the instructor, who observes and intervenes in the event of a fall. The first stage involves a moment of initial meditation, which, if in a group, consists of one circle ceremony to get to know each other and dissolve tensions.
At this point, after the first awareness asanas that act as a warm-up, well-defined roles enter the fullness of their definition. By synchronizing the breath, yoga positions are performed resting on the hands and feet of the base. The roles are interchangeable, but often, especially in the more dynamic part, we specialize in one or the other. The fundamental requirement? Trust each other. The asanas that are performed are the classic ones, but modified to be able to adapt to the practice of couples.
Taking advantage of the weight of the body, gods are performed movements of Thai Massage in suspension that allow you to lengthen the spine, loosen the joints e thus favoring twisting and stretching. The breath opens, the musculature is strengthened and the sense of balance is trained.
If practiced with your partner, acroyoga strengthens dialogue and harmony. Trusting each other and trusting is in fact fundamental. The practice also improves self-perception and allows you to relate to the other person in a balanced way. Of course, like any practice, acroyoga takes time and dedication and is often practiced alongside classical yoga or anyway after it.
