U.S. Secret Service (USSS) Acting Director Ronald Rowe plans to remain in Florida “indefinitely” as the investigation into an apparent second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump unfolds, according to USSS spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.
Rowe will also meet with local officials today and then take a walk around the golf course this afternoon, Guglielmi told CNN this Monday (16).
He was appointed to the position on July 23 after Kimberly Cheatle resigned following Trump’s shooting in the ear in an assassination attempt.
Trump and Rowe will meet this afternoon in Florida, two sources familiar with the matter told CNN .
The FBI said it is “investigating what appears to be an assassination attempt” on Donald Trump at his Florida golf club, just two months after an attempt to kill the Republican presidential candidate at a rally in Pennsylvania.
The former president was not injured.
Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, the owner of a small construction company in Hawaii, was arrested in connection with Sunday’s incident, according to three law enforcement sources.
Trump was moving between holes five and six at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach with donor Steve Witkoff when shots rang out.
The golf outing was a last-minute addition to Trump’s schedule, sources said.
A Secret Service agent spotted a rifle barrel sticking out of a fence and agents shot a man in the bushes along the perimeter, according to Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw.
Bradshaw said his office was alerted at 1:30 p.m. local time that the Secret Service had fired shots.
The person was 300 to 500 yards from Trump, an official said. The suspect then fled in a car.
A witness saw the suspect run out of the bushes and took a photo of his car, which led to the suspect’s apprehension.
Police drove onto Interstate 95 before stopping the suspect’s car and detaining him. The suspect was not armed when officers removed him from the car, and he did not make any statements.
The person in custody is Routh, according to three law enforcement sources.
Law enforcement officials found an AK-47-style rifle with a telescopic sight; two backpacks that had ceramic tiles attached to them to complement a bulletproof vest; and a GoPro where the suspect was positioned.
“This whole setup indicates a very high level of advance planning,” former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe told CNN .
Investigators expect a federal court in South Florida to require “a mental health evaluation” of Routh before any possible criminal charges, a law enforcement source told CNN .
