Militant conservationists from animal rights campaign group Animal Rebellion broke into the royal estate last night and emerged this morning, with three lambs that would be slaughtered in a few days.
The three women, wearing pink Animal Rebellion T-shirts, were seen transporting the young animals from Appleton Farm to West Newton. Later, they loaded the lambs into the back of a truck and drove away.
Among the three was Rose Patterson, 33-year-old director of the campaign group, who was previously arrested as suspected of conspiracy to cause public nuisance. Patterson, along with the other women named Sarah and Rosa, said they rescued the lambs, which they named Sammy, Sunny and Sooty, to save them from slaughter.
Footage of the theft shows the three women running to the farm, picking up a lamb and calling it “baby” before turning around and carrying it to the van. The women call the lamb “cutie” as they loaded it into the back of the truck, which was filled with straw.
Another clip shows the activists sitting in a field and they watch the lambs grazing.
The three activists have since “surrendered to police” and “continue to believe the jury will side with them, with care and freedom,” according to the dailymail.co.uk. They were later photographed standing proudly with a banner that read ‘I saved the king’s sheep” and “this is how we love animals». It is unknown if the lambs have been returned to the farmer or if they have been released into the wild Britain.
