Activists sue Shell directors over ‘failed response’ to climate change

A group of activists sued Shell directors in the UK for what they consider to be failures in the oil company’s response to climate change. ClientEarth, a group of environmental lawyers that owns a small stake in Shell, said it had filed a lawsuit against the company’s Board of Directors.

The organization explained that the lawsuit marks the first time that corporate directors can be held personally accountable for a company’s action on fossil fuels.

The group, which said it was backed by institutional investors who together own more than 12 million Shell shares, added that the company had failed to set sufficient emission reduction targets.

Last week, Shell posted a record annual profit for the past year, joining its US peers in recouping early pandemic losses amid rising energy prices.
