What is ALS?

THE myotrophic lateral sclerosis the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (English: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS), also known as motor neuron diseaseis a degenerative disorder of the nervous system.

The disease is characterized by spasticity, fasciculations and progressive muscle weakness. This results in difficulty speaking, swallowing and eventually stopping breathing.

Its causes are unknown in 90% to 95% of cases (sporadic), while in the remaining cases it is hereditary.

There is no known cure for the disease.

The earliest known description of the disease was made in 1824 by Charles Bell. In 1869 Jean-Martin Charcot was the first to associate the symptoms with neurological problems and in 1874 the term amyotrophic lateral sclerosis was used for the first time, while it is sometimes also referred to as Flesh disease. The disease gained wider publicity in the US when baseball player Lou Gehring was diagnosed with it (so the disease is also referred to as Lou Gehring's disease), while it later attracted international interest when it became known that the famous scientist Stephen Hawking suffered from the disease.
