The actor Tony Down known for his role as Wally Cleaver on the 1950s American television show “Leave It to Beaver,” is alive but very ill, his team said Tuesday, correcting an earlier statement that said he had died.
“Tony’s wife Lauren, who was very distraught, had notified us this morning that Tony was dead and requested that we notify all of his fans,” the statement said. “We have since received a call from Tony’s daughter-in-law saying that while Tony is not in good condition, he has not passed away yet.”
Dow, 77, diagnosed with cancer, is undergoing palliative treatment, his son Christopher told the media.
A statement from Dow’s staff said the actor’s son and daughter-in-law were “at his side, comforting him.”
In “Leave It to Beaver,” Dow played the older teenage brother of the show’s eponymous character, Theodore “Beaver” Cleaver.
Dow’s role in the show, which aired from 1957 to 1963 and depicted an idealized American family living a quiet, post-war suburban life, made him a cultural icon.
In late May, Dow shared a message on Facebook thanking her fans for their well-wishes and detailing her health progress, including her experience with cancer treatment.
