Acute childhood hepatitis arrives in Mexico; Nuevo León reports first 4 cases

The Ministry of Health of Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico reported that this Thursday the first four cases of acute childhood hepatitis were detected in Mexico.

At a press conference, the head of the State Health Secretariat, Alma Rosa Marroquín Escamilla, gave the epidemiological notice, recalling that the first case was registered in April in the United Kingdom and since then around 300 cases have been identified in 12 countries.

Regarding the four cases in Mexico, Alma Marroquín mentioned that the patients are stable; however, they are kept under observation to evaluate their medical evolution. She also highlighted that the cases were identified in different public and private institutions, as well as the fact that all the minors are of different ages.

Marroquín mentioned that one should be aware of the symptoms of acute childhood hepatitis, such as diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin, mucous membranes, and yellowing of the conjunctiva of the eyes, these last two symptoms being the main characteristics of hepatitis. .

If we identify these signs or symptoms in our children, we have to take them immediately to a doctor to evaluate them and determine whether or not it is hepatitis. If this is the case, the patient will be referred to a specialized center.

Marroquín indicated that, regularly, hepatitis in children is benign and is caused by the Hepatitis A virus. But in these 300 cases worldwide, said virus has not been detected, which sets off alarms in the health sector.

There is no (identified) specific causal agent; There are different theories and in a percentage of cases, just under 30%, a virus called adenovirus has been isolated in parallel.

Regarding sanitary measures, the minister recommended washing hands, covering the nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, avoiding sharing food, drinks, cutlery and plates, cleaning and disinfecting toys or objects that children can put in their mouths, and disinfect surfaces and spaces for common use.

On the other hand, Rosa María Wong, head of the Clinical Research subdivision of the UNAM Faculty of Medicine, asked parents and guardians to be careful and watch out for possible symptoms in their children, not to attend to home remedies and go immediately to a doctor.

He also recommended reinforcing hygiene measures and cooking food well, since the hepatitis virus is usually spread by poorly washed food, although in this case the exact source of infection has not been detected.
