Ad. Georgiadis for the tests: We do not put the ceiling ‘for the eyes of the world’

“We sought through an exhaustive dialogue with the medical community and the laboratory sector the golden section that will ensure the best possible price without compromising the adequacy of the tests, the operation of the laboratories and the quality of the tests before we reach 47 euros.” said in an interview this morning, on ERT 1, the Minister of Development Adonis Georgiadis talking about a price “very reasonable and fair”.

Commenting on the position of the Panhellenic Medical Association that the price should not be reduced because the quality of services will be dragged down, he noted that since the era of the 60 euro ceiling until today the cost of equipment purchased has been amortized and the profit margin has increased, while Omicron has multiplied the demand. “The ability of laboratories to operate profitably remains and they can test at a lower price,” he said, noting that these changes were taken into account before the ceiling was decided, adding that large chains could go lower but provincial ones could not do less.

Asked about the number of tests that a laboratory can perform daily, he noted that an exception was requested to give the results faster for an additional cost, which he said was not accepted. “We do not set the ceiling ‘for the eyes of the world.’ No one can cross the line with money.

Regarding the prescription of PCR, he said that it has logic as a request but it is the responsibility of the Ministry of Health to decide as it would be included in the costs of EOPY, something that as he said he is not able to know if EOPY can shoulder it. He asked himself: “It is not so simple, how many tests will be prescribed?”.

Commenting on the relevant objections of the opposition, he said that we live in a difficult situation that requires the responsibility that belongs to everyone. “Let’s say the state paid for all the tests, this is not free, the state spends our money, taxes should be increased,” he added. “If we talk about prescription this will be for medical reasons.
