Ad. Georgiadis: The EU needs autonomy and self-sufficiency, at least in critical goods

“Today, a few hours ago, the European Commission and the responsible Commissioner, Ms. Vestager, gave us the approval for the new state aid map, including the additional support for the de-lignitization areas. ‘Well, the new development law officially begins with the new higher limits. It is another success of the Ministry of Development and Investments and especially of the Deputy Minister, Mr. Nikos Papathanasis”.

This was pointed out by the Minister of Development and Investments, Adonis Georgiadis, speaking at the opening of the Research and Development Center (E&A) of raw materials and finished drugs, of the pharmaceutical industry DEMO ABEE, in Thermi Thessaloniki.

The minister emphasized that the investment is the result of the establishment of the so-called investment claw back “on the initiative of the Prime Minister for his inclusion in the Recovery Fund and the securing of 300 million euros so that we can now have a strong financing base and the Greek and foreign pharmaceutical companies operating in Greece to plan investments”.

“This initiative, he added, has been crowned with great success. Investment plans that today exceed a total of 600 million euros in value have already been submitted and approved. Today, here in front of you, you see one of the results of this political initiative.”

The minister also underlined that the pandemic was a strong shock for all the European leaderships, as then for the first time they realized that if imports from Malaysia, India and China were closed, the Europeans would very soon run out of medicine. And this was a shock to European societies, as they realized for the first time the extent of their dependence on countries outside Europe. “In the new world, he concluded, the European Union is obliged to find autonomy and self-sufficiency, at least in critical goods. And what could be more critical than health and medicine?”
