Ad. Georgiadis: The goal is for Greece to become a privileged partner of Saudi Arabia

The benefits that will arise for the Greek economy from the signing of the agreements with Saudi Arabia were mentioned by the Minister of Development and Investments Adonis Georgiadis, in an interview today, on the radio station SKAI 100.3, commenting on the results of the visit of the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia in Greece while he also referred to the bill for the rehabilitation of the Elefsina Shipyards.

In particular, the minister said that “it was without exaggeration a historic visit. The crown prince of Saudi Arabia said that “I will not go to Greece empty-handed” and indeed he did not come empty-handed. He announced very important agreements mainly in the field of energy, but also logistics”.

He noted: “We were asked to turn Greece into a gateway for the distribution of electricity from renewable sources to the rest of the European continent through Greece, with a huge benefit for our country as it would mean that Greece would have the lowest price for energy in Europe and could earn a lot from the resale of this energy. At the same time, they asked us to become the logistics center through which all Saudi Arabian products for export to European countries will pass. They also asked for the cooperation of Greece with Saudi Arabia in the field of tourism in order for Greece to become a gateway to Saudi Arabia for the rest of Europe through Athens. These are all projects which, once implemented, will completely change Greece’s level.”

He also noted that: “At the Business Forum, where the meeting of large private companies from Greece and Saudi Arabia took place, 16 agreements totaling 4 billion euros were signed, in almost all sectors of the Greek economy, such as energy, defense, shipping, agricultural production and others… We already have a flow of investments from Saudi Arabia to Greece and also from Greece to Saudi Arabia. This relationship is two-way, with the aim in the coming years to be a privileged economic player with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which has incredible economic power and under the current conditions of rising oil prices, even more so.”

The minister added: “Our government led by Kyriakos Mitsotakis has pursued a foreign policy that is extremely multidimensional. At the moment we have a very close strategic relationship with Israel, with Egypt, with the United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This has created a pivot in the region, where Greece is no longer the Greece we knew… I was sick of hearing all these years “what a great foreign policy the Turks have”. Right now the exact opposite is happening. Turkey is completely isolated. and the big player in the region is undoubtedly Saudi Arabia, with which Greece has the strategic relationship I mentioned above”.

Elefsina Shipyards

“The Elefsina shipyards have been closed for 15 years. They owe about 450 million. They have 600 workers who are worried about their jobs and their money as the company has been underpaying them for many years. After a lot of effort we managed to reach a recovery plan that now makes sense”.

This was noted by Mr. Georgiadis and he added: “What is the consolidation plan? It is voted on in the Parliament, we go to court around the beginning of October, the Americans put in 102 million from DFC, the workers immediately get a part of their retrospectives, the shipyards are transferred to ONEX, investments are made and after two or three years the employees are paid and we have a shipyard, which operates with renewed tanks, with renewed machinery and with a vibrant industry according to the standards that we cleaned the shipyards of Syros”.

In addition, he noted: “I will not allow this plan to be launched and be blown up by political gimmicks. Either it will be a national bet and all three parties will get the “yes” of this plan or the two parties, SYRIZA and PASOK -KINAL, they will say no and in this case I will not go to court and the shipyards will be closed”.

Finally he said: “I was accused of blackmailing them. Is it reasonable for the blackmailer to say that he will come to the opinion of the person being blackmailed? That is, if SYRIZA says that he does not consider this consolidation plan correct and the minister says “fine, since you do not consider it correct, it will not we do”, is this blackmail?”.
