Ada Colau announces a plan to pedestrianize the center of Barcelona

The mayor of Barcelona, ​​Ada Colau, has announced that the superblocks will extend to Eixample, with the conversion of 21 streets in the district into green axes, one in three, and with the transformation of 21 intersections into squares, a 10-year plan that will begin to implement this mandate in four streets, with an initial budget of almost 38 million euros.

“We want Barcelona to be a great superblock. We want to extend the superblock model throughout Barcelona to generate space for people, for life, to walk safely and to gain access to streets and squares to find ourselves and a greener environment”, Colau said, adding that it is a path of the future that “the crisis -the coronavirus- has confirmed.”

The mayor has assured that the best way to make this “scale jump” in the superblock model is to start by extending it in the plot Sow from Barcelona’s Eixample, and start with the streets Consell de Cent, Borrell, Rocafort and Girona in this mandate.

Colau has announced the call for an international competition that will choose the multidisciplinary teams that will define the pattern of the future green axes and squares and the projects of the first four areas of the Eixample where they will be launched, taking into account the contributions of the different participatory processes that will be carried out.

The forecast is that the projects are written From May and the works begin on first quarter of 2022, with an investment of 37.8 million euros, and that they are underway before the end of the mandate, in 2023, reports Efe.

“Street of the XXI century”

The winners of the contest for green axes will be commissioned to define “the street model of the 21st century”, which will be progressively implemented in the rest of the city and will prioritize “pedestrians, recreation, stay, green and biodiversity “.

The Deputy Mayor for Ecology and Urbanism, Janet Sanz, explained that the bus will not pass through the green axes, the speed limit for cars will be 10 kilometers per hour, that spaces will be “de-asphalted” to improve the quality of the green and that the objective is that the neighbors of the new area have an axis or a green square at a maximum of 200 meters.

After learning about the project, the Popular Party has called for a citizen consultation on the plan to extend the superblocks to the Eixample.
