Additional sanctions against Belarus by the European Union

The Member States of the European Union today adopted Add 78 additional names and 7 organizations to the list of Belarusian officials against which sanctions are imposed to suppress the opposition.

The 7 are involved in forcing the RyanAir plane to land in Minsk for the arrest of a pro-government journalist, diplomats announced in Brussels, as broadcast by APE-MPE.

The countries’ approval was given at the meeting of the Ambassadors of the Member States of the Union in Brussels. It will be ratified on 21 June at the Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Luxembourg and the sanctions will take effect when their names are published in the EU Official Journal.

The Europeans prepare a package of financial sanctions, which will be added to the EU countries’ decision to ban Belarusian airlines from accessing their airspace. The ban mainly concerns the national airline Belavia.

Seven people, including senior Belarussian officials, have been charged for the diversion of the Athens-Vilnius flight. A warplane also took part in the operation, forcing the crew to change course and accompanying it until it landed in Minsk.

The sanctions decided today are personal and include a ban on staying in EU countries and seizure of assets. European funding for organizations added to the list is also prohibited.

The European Union has already imposed sanctions on 88 members of the regime, including President Alexander Lukashenko and his son.

The financial sanctions under discussion are aimed at hurting the regime’s “wallet”. “Europeans continue to impose economic sanctions, but this time we must take real action against Lukashenko,” EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell told AFP.

The target of the economic sanctions under consideration is the export of potash and the natural gas pipeline through which the gas supplied to the European Union is transported from Russia, which can reach through another pipeline, Borrell clarified.
