ADMIE submitted an official proposal for participation in the increase of the share capital to be carried out by the implementing body of the electricity interconnection of Crete-Cyprus-Israel EuroAsia Interconnector, as the President and CEO of the Operator, Mr. Manos Manousakis, stated in an interview with newshub.gr. on the occasion of his visit a few days ago to the construction site of the Conversion Station being built in Damasta, Heraklion, as part of the large electricity interconnection between Crete and Attica.
Mr. Manousakis pointed out that “the proposal of ADMIE to become a shareholder of the EuroAsia Interconnector company was already in the making” and emphasized that “based on this proposal, ADMIE will acquire 25% of the share capital, and will have the control of the implementation of the project”. The new, strategically important international interconnection of Crete-Cyprus-Israel will also start from Damasta, as the “starting point” of the project will be the electrical interconnection of Crete with Cyprus. “Cyprus”, as noted by Mr. Manousakis, “will cease to be energy isolated, it will be electrically interconnected with Greece and through Greece with the whole of Europe”.
In 2024, the great interconnection between Crete and Attica will be completed
With reference to the “big” electric interconnection of Crete-Attica, the President and CEO of ADMIE found significant progress of the work during his visit to the construction site of Damasta and estimated that the completion of the project in 2024 is a realistic goal. He pointed out that “after the double interconnection of Crete, the entire load of the island will now be covered by the mainland”, while with the development of renewable energy sources that will follow, “it is likely that we will see Crete exporting green energy, helping in greening the country’s energy mix”.
According to the schedule, by the end of the summer the earthworks in Damasta will be completed and the foundation works of the building facilities of the Conversion Station will begin. At the same time, the installation works of the underground cable sections with a total length of 11 km will begin that will connect the underwater cables from Korakia of Heraklion to the new Conversion Station. By the end of 2022, the laying of the second electric cable between Crete and Attica, with a total length of 333 km, will begin, while at the beginning of 2023, the second part of the first electric cable, between Milos and Crete, will be installed.
On the occasion of his visit to the construction site of Damastas, which was attended by the Mayor of Maleviziou Mr. Menelaos Bokeas and the Deputy Governor of the Environment Mr. Nikos Xylouris, Mr. Manousakis referred to the excellent cooperation that the Administrator has developed with the Local Government and its residents island. “Since the beginning of the project, we have been in contact with the local community and have essentially designed the Conversion Station together, with the aim of minimizing the possibility of disturbance and supporting the needs of the residents. There is also a very positive climate in cooperation with the Region and the Municipality us and in the near future we expect to work together even more closely in order to speed up the processes, where necessary. Everything we have promised to the local community will be implemented. ADMIE is a company under public control that respects the environment and the areas in which is active”.
