“Adolescence”: meet protagonist, who debuted as an actor in the series

Owen Cooper 15, protagonist of “Adolescence” made his debut as an actor playing Jamie Miller a 13 -year -old accused of committing a violent crime. The series, which premiered on March 14, quickly won the public and took the top of the most watched series on Netflix.

Although Jamie’s role in “Adolescence” was his first actor experience, Owen impressed by his performance and gained the attention of viewers and critics.

Owen Cooper was born in Warrington, being the son of a caregiver and an information technology professional. He has two older brothers and, before devoting himself to acting, dreamed of being a soccer player, being a member of the Warrington Rylands U15 team.

However, his interest in acting grew after starting weekly classes with The Drama Mob in Manchester.

Regarding the presence on social networks, Owen created his Instagram account in April 2021 and currently has 57,300 followers. Its first publication was made in January this year.

The young man was chosen for the role of Jamie by the cast director Shaheen Baig, after being selected among 500 other candidates. “I had never worked before, so just sent a tape, without waiting much. I came back from school and my mother told me that I got the paper,” he told The Guardian.

In addition to acting in “Adolescence”, Owen Cooper already has a new project scheduled. In 2026, he will be part of the cast of “O Morro dos Ventos Uivant”, where he will play the young version of Heathcliff, a role also lived by Jacob Elordi.

The heavy cast includes Margot Robbie as Catherine. Actress Erin Doherty, who starred with Owen in the third episode of the series, where he has an intense scene of therapy, praised his performance: “This guy is undoubtedly one of the best actors I’ve ever worked with. Seriously, the chin is falling that this is his first work. It’s absolutely ridiculous.”

The plot of “adolescence” addresses contemporary themes such as toxic masculinity, bullying and the impact of social networks. In history, Jamie is accused of killing a stabbed schoolmate, and the series explores how crime affects her family and society around her.

Created by Stephen Graham, who also acts as Jamie’s father, the series is not based on a real case, but is inspired by incidents of crimes committed by young people.
