Adolescent vaccination: Belgium gave the ‘green light’

“Yes” to vaccination against coronavirus in adolescents 12-15 years old said Belgium.

The Belgian Ministers of Health who met on Tuesday (6/7) followed the positive recommendation of the Supreme Health Council of the country for the extension of the covid-19 vaccine to adolescents aged 12 to 15 years, on a voluntary basis and with parental leave.

Vaccination of adolescents will be carried out with its preparation Pfizer-BioNTech which is the only one currently approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for this age group.

The Regions of the country, as broadcast by the Athens News Agency, are now expected to organize information campaigns for parents and guardians.

“It is interesting, in terms of public health, that as many people as possible are vaccinated teenagers. However, it is a very sensitive issue, since we are talking about children or teenagers. Therefore, we will obviously not treat them in the same way as adults. “Parental leave is required,” said Brussels Health Minister Alain Maron.

For his part, Flanders Health Minister Butter Beck said: “The more children are vaccinated, the less the virus and the variants can be transmitted to this group.”

“Especially with the increase in the number of infections due to Delta variant, “It is important to achieve the highest possible vaccination coverage to achieve collective immunity.”

229,000 Flanders teenagers will receive a mail invitation to be vaccinated

In Flanders, some 229,000 teens in this age group are expected to receive an invitation by mail to their home address and the first vaccinations will start in the week of July 19th.

Brussels and Wallonia have not yet announced when they will start vaccinating this age group.
