- Shares of Advanced Micro Devices lost nearly 5% on Tuesday.
- AMD was chosen by Sony to partner on an autonomous driving system.
- Nvidia announces its new Blackwell GPU architecture to replace Hopper.
- Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang calls the B200 the “most powerful chip in the world.”
The actions of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) They fell more than 4.8% on Tuesday, as the semiconductor market consolidated after the start of Nvidia's annual GTC conference (NVDA). Nvidia announced its new Blackwell GPU, which should expand the global market for artificial intelligence chips, although possibly at the expense of its competitors.
The Nasdaq added 0.2% on Tuesday, while the S&P 500 gained nearly double that. Nvidia gained 1% despite the sales recorded at the beginning of the session, while Super Micro Computer (SMCI) plummeted 9%.
AMD News: LiDAR Partnership with Sony
On Tuesday, Advanced Micro Devices announced that it had partnered with Sony Semiconductor Solutions to supply the latter with “adaptive computing technology” used in its self-driving LiDAR system.
AMD technology enables faster data processing and greater accuracy, according to Sony's initial tests, and the semiconductor company beat out other unnamed competitors to take Sony's business.
“By incorporating AMD's adaptive computing technology into our LiDAR reference design, we are able to set new standards for performance, reliability and adaptability,” said Takayoshi Ozone, general manager of Automotive Development at Sony Semiconductor Solutions.
Nvidia GTC Conference presents new technologies
However, it appears that Nvidia's Blackwell announcement overshadowed AMD's LiDAR news on Tuesday. The new Blackwell architecture is intended to replace the current next-generation Hopper architecture for specialized AI chips.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang called the new Blackwell-based B200 GPU “the most powerful chip in the world.” By adding two of them along with a Grace CPU on a single board, Nvidia announced its new GB200 “superchip.”
According to Jensen, Nvidia will package 36 Grace CPUs and 72 Blackwell GPUs into a complete system with 72 GPU NVLinks. Called GB200 NVL72, the new system is capable of processing large language models (LLM) about thirty times faster than the current leading technology.
These new products could make things difficult for Advanced Micro Devices. Analysts from several investment banks stated at the GTC conference that Nvidia continued to outperform all its rivals.
AMD Forecast
AMD shares hit the 50-day simple moving average on Tuesday for the first time in six months. This shows that the setback has been more serious than any other recorded this year.
The sell-off is likely to continue for several reasons. First, AMD stock closed below the January 25 high, just below $185. This level is important as it showed itself as resistance again at the end of February. Secondly, the MACD indicator has registered a clear bearish turn.
If the decline continues, AMD stock could make lower lows to the $162.50 level that acted as support twice in January and once in late February. You can bet on it if AMD closes below the 50-day SMA later this week.
