Advancement of variants warns of the role of vaccines in the fight against Covid

The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that the BA.5 subvariant of Ômicron is expected to become the predominant version of the Covid-19 virus in the Americas within the next few weeks. The strain has already been detected in 22 countries in the region and also spreads across Europe and Asia.

BA.5 is considered a more contagious and vaccine-resistant subvariant and is a cause for concern, as the immunization rate in the world has slowly advanced and the numbers of cases and deaths have risen again. In Brazil, among the obstacles to vaccination are the reduced adherence among children aged 5 to 11 years and the slow pace of application of booster doses, important to increase protection against the virus.

In this episode of E Tem Mais, Carol Nogueira presents an overview of the data on the new variants of the coronavirus. To describe the risks posed by the circulation of more resistant strains and how vaccines help to avoid a setback in the fight against Covid-19, pediatricians and infectologists Marcelo Otsuka and Renato Kfouri participate in this episode.
