Aeroflot: Bought 8 aircraft from foreign leasing companies

Russia’s largest airline, Aeroflot, announced on Friday that it had bought eight Airbus A330 aircraft from foreign leasing companies “under contractual obligations”, without naming them.

International sanctions against Russia meant that Western leasing companies had to terminate contracts for more than 500 aircraft leased by Russian airlines.

More than 400 of them, worth almost 10 billion, were in Russia at the time of the dispute, and Moscow barred airlines from taking them off to return to their countries of origin.

To ensure that they continue to have valid certificates of airworthiness and that Russian airlines continue to use them, the Russian authorities have transferred the aircraft to the Russian register.

Meanwhile, leasing companies have abandoned long-term insurance claims to try to recover some of the lost value of the aircraft.

The biggest claim was filed by AerCap, the world’s largest aircraft leasing company, which has filed a $ 3.5 billion insurance claim for more than 100 aircraft.

AerCap did not immediately respond to Reuters calls for comment.
