Aeroflot, S7 Group and Airbus promised to conduct flight on biofuel mixture until 2024

Today, December 13, Aeroflot, S7 Group and Airbus officially signed the Declaration on the establishment of a biofuel union called the Eurasian SAF Alliance. If everything goes according to plan, the newly-made union will conduct the first flight on a biofuel mixture already in 2024 – representatives of Aeroflot and S7 Group told the information publication RBC about this. Moreover, the management of the companies announced that the alliance is setting itself a rather important global goal to develop a so-called roadmap for the use of biofuels in Russia, as well as to coordinate joint research in this direction.

Alliance members admit that carbon neutrality can be achieved in the Russian aviation sector in the coming decades, which is extremely important for accelerating the decarbonization process. At the same time, the companies do not plan to limit themselves to only three founders of the alliance – the “Eurasian SAF Alliance” is an inclusive ecosystem that remains open for participation by companies along the entire SAF-fuel creation chain. We are talking about fuel manufacturers, airlines, airport owners, as well as manufacturers of aircraft, engines and even scientists from research institutes.

For example, this declaration has already been signed by the companies Gazprom Neft and Volga-Dnepr, as well as the National Research Center Institute named after N.Ye. Zhukovsky “and the State Research Institute of Civil Aviation. Together, the alliance will work to promote and deploy SAF, a low-carbon synthetic or biological aviation fuel that many believe is the future of commercial aviation. So far, such fuel is not produced on the territory of Russia, but the situation is likely to change in the foreseeable future.
