Afghan women return to school and are separated from men after the takeover by the Taliban

On Monday, September 6, university classes began in Afghanistan, but with the conquest of Kabul and the takeover of power by the Taliban, now men and women are separated by a curtain that divides them within the classroom. In addition, female students were forced to wear the hiyab.

Although gender separation within the classroom might not seem like a big deal, it actually is, as this is the way the Taliban show their disapproval of women continuing to study at any educational level.

The photographs were taken at the Ibn-e Sina University, Kabul, and in them you can see how men and women are separated by a cloth. For the moment, the Taliban appear to be fulfilling the right to education for women, just as they had promised. However, they are imposing their own rules, hinting that there will be no equal opportunities.

The Taliban in power will defend the rights of all, especially those of women, but they will have to follow Islamic values. They will be able to access education and work as long as they are wearing the hijab.

On the other hand, women who are living under this regime say that they are willing to follow the rules as long as they have access to education and to achieve their goals. But this does not mean that they totally agree with what is imposed on them, because in the end, they are restricting their freedom and equality.

I will wear whatever type of hijab they ask me, as long as they keep universities open to women. I am very excited to start my next chapter in life and my sister, who is finishing high school this year, will also apply to one of the private universities at the end of the year.

– Mina Qasem, college student
