Afghanistan’s top leader today called on the international community to recognize the Taliban government, saying the world has become “a small village” and that restoring diplomatic relations would solve the country’s problems.
No country has formally recognized the new regime in Afghanistan since the Taliban seized power in August 2021.
In a message broadcast today, a few days before Eid al-Fitr, the “celebration of the end of fasting” marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, Afghanistan’s supreme leader, Hibatullah Ahunja, did not address the issues. cause tensions between Afghanistan and the international community, such as women’s rights.
On the contrary, he said that recognizing the Taliban regime was a priority “so that we can solve our problems formally and with respect for the rules and principles of diplomacy.”
“Without a doubt, the world has turned into a small village,” said Ahudjand, who lives isolated in Kandahar, the Taliban’s spiritual stronghold, and has never appeared in public since the Islamist movement returned to power.
“Afghanistan has a role to play in world peace and stability. In this regard, the people must recognize the Islamic Emirate,” he added.
The message came at a time when the security situation in Afghanistan appears to be deteriorating again, as it has improved significantly since the Taliban seized power.
There have been a number of bombings in recent weeks against the Shiite Khazara minority, several of which have been claimed by Islamic State.
Akhunda did not immediately comment on the allegations, but said he was pleased to announce that Afghanistan had “a strong Islamic and national army” and a “solid intelligence service”.
Much of the international community wants the recognition of the Taliban regime and the deployment of humanitarian aid to Afghanistan to be directly linked to respect for women’s rights.
