At least 20 people lost their lives from sudden floods in the central Afghanistan the last 48 hours, an official of the disaster management service pointed out on Monday (22/8) while the powerful rainfall they destroy thousands of houses and cause damage to agricultural lands.
Afghanistan has been hit by a series of natural disasters this yearincluding drought and a powerful earthquake that killed more than 1,000 people in June.
“Twenty people are dead, 35 have been injured by the floods in Logar province,” said Mohammad Nasim Haqqani, the spokesman for Afghanistan’s disaster management authority, as reported by the Athens News Agency.
Unofficial information suggests many more victims.
As it tries to deal with the aftermath of the disasters, the Taliban government, which seized power in Afghanistan last August, is appealing for help.
“We ask the international community, especially Islamic countries and humanitarian organizations, to urgently help the victims”government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in a video message posted on social media.
International aid agencies have been providing aid for months, but warn that more access and funding is needed to avoid a humanitarian disaster, with thousands of people left homeless and without access to shelter or clean drinking water.
