Afghanistan: Biden Defends Decision to Withdraw US Troops – “I do not regret it”

The decision he made to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan supported by the American president Joe Biden.

“I do not regret my decision,” he told reporters from the White House on Tuesday (10/8), while calling on Afghans to “fight for their country.”

The last US troops are expected to leave Afghanistan on August 31, after 20 years in the war-torn country.

Ever since the US president announced the withdrawal of US troops from AfghanistanAbout a month ago, the Taliban launched a large – scale operation that has taken control of much of the country and nine provincial capitals in just six days.

“Afghans” must want to fight “and” they must fight for their country, “Biden said.

“We have spent more than $ 1 trillion over twenty years, training and equipping (…) more than 300,000 Afghan soldiers,” he added.

The US president assured that the Americans “will keep their promise” to continue to support and finance the Afghan army.

State Department spokesman Ned Price followed suit, stressing yesterday that the Afghan armed forces “are far outnumbered” by the Taliban and “have the potential to deliver more significant blows.”

“This impression that the advance of Taliban “It can not be stopped, it is not the reality on the field”, he estimated as broadcast by the Athens News Agency.

A spokesman for the Taliban’s political bureau, meanwhile, told al-Jazeera television yesterday that the rebels remained committed to the Doha-Kabul talks and did not want them to collapse.

A member of the Afghan government delegation spoke to the same television network and said that Kabul was asking for a mediator in the talks “in order to determine the seriousness of the parties”.

A Taliban spokesman said: “It is the government that’s rejecting the mediator in the first place, not the Taliban,” according to al Jazeera.

“We ask the international community to accurately assess the reality on the ground,” he added.

However, the member of the government delegation complained that the guerrillas “are not interested in the negotiations, but in order to achieve their goals by force”. “The international community should urge the Taliban to be serious,” he added.
