A deadly explosion occurred earlier outside a mosque in the western Afghan city of Herat. The explosion killed an imam close to the Taliban, as well as civilians, the police announced and broadcast the country’s largest private television network TOLOnews.
“Mujib Rahman Ansari, along with some of his bodyguards and civilians, were killed on their way to the mosque,” Herat police spokesman Mahmoud Rasoli said without giving a casualty figure.

The Taliban claim to have improved security in the country since they took power about a year ago, but in recent months there have been several explosions, some of them targeting crowded mosques during prayers.
