LAST UPDATE: 13:33
An explosion outside a mosque in the western Afghan city of Herat on Friday killed a prominent Taliban cleric and civilians.
“Mujib Rahman Ansari, along with some of his guards and civilians, were killed on their way to the mosque,” Herat police spokesman Mahmoud Rasoli was quoted as saying by Reuters.
The police spokesman, however, did not give an exact number of victims of the explosion.
The Al Jazeera network, citing unnamed sources, reported that the explosion killed 14 people.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid tweeted his “sincere condolences” for Ansari’s death, adding that the perpetrators of the attack would be punished.
So far, as Reuters reports, no one has claimed responsibility for the Herat mosque blast.
The Taliban say security has improved in the country since they took power about a year ago, but in recent months there have been a series of explosions, some of them in crowded mosques during prayer times.
