Afghanistan had ‘tragic year’ after new Taliban occupation, says professor

The Taliban’s occupation of Afghanistan after the United States left the country can be summarized as “a tragic year”, in the assessment of UFRJ professor of international relations, Fernando Brâncoli.

“There was hope that the Taliban it could be pragmatic, it would fulfill agreements that were sewn in this troubled exit from the United States, but it was not confirmed”, he said, in an interview with CNN Radio .

The expert recalled that girls cannot attend schools, women are not allowed to participate in political life and the feeling of insecurity, as a whole, has increased.

“The Taliban quickly decided that they would operate along the most conservative and fundamentalist line,” he added.

According to the professor, Afghanistan is “very dependent on international humanitarian aid, lives in extreme poverty and has a complicated situation from a security point of view.”

For all these reasons, Fernando Brâncoli reinforces that political analysts already defend that a new intervention will be necessary, so that the country is not a focus of global insecurity.

At the same time, the expert does not see Washington as having “no willingness to return to Afghanistan”, and that there should be no military intervention in the country.

However, he sees that other interventions can be made, such as negotiating the remittance of resources, if the Taliban admit that they exaggerated the measures adopted.
