One person was killed and five injured in an explosion in the capital of Balkh province in the north Afghanistana few days after the death of the provincial governor in an explosion claimed by the Islamic State jihadist group.
“An explosion occurred at the second police station of Balkh”said Balkh police spokesman Mohammad Asif Waziri, who confirmed the death of one person, noting that three of the five injured were children.
Mohammad Fardin Nowrozi, a journalist in Balkh, told Reuters that he and other journalists were injured in the blast, but did not elaborate.
The causes of the explosion are currently unknown.
Taliban authorities are already investigating the blast that killed provincial governor Mawlawi Mohammad Dawood Muzamil and two others in his office on Thursday.
The governor of southern Kandahar province will serve as interim governor of Balkh, his spokesman Haji Zaid told Reuters, until Supreme Leader Haibatullah Akhundzada chooses a new governor for the northern Afghan province, which is a major hub for trade with central Asia.
