Afghanistan: One million children are working today

“Up to one-fifth of families in Afghanistan have been forced to send their children to work as their incomes have fallen over the past six months and an estimated one million children are working today,” the group added.

The London-based humanitarian organization, which defends the rights of childrensaid it had surveyed 1,409 households in seven provinces, where it has maintained a functioning presence since the Taliban (against whom the UN imposed sanctions on terrorism) took power in mid-August.

They lost income – 7.5% begging

The NGO estimates that 82% of Afghans have lost income since the collapse of the previous government, with a third of respondents say they lost all their income and a quarter of those polled said they lost more than half, according to APE, citing Sputnik.

Rising prices following the transition to power in Afghanistan have left many Afghans struggling to secure food. About 36% said they buy food from the market on credit, 39% borrow money from better-off families and 7.5% beg.
