Afghanistan – Pentagon: No change in withdrawal plan until 31 August

The Pentagon announced on Tuesday that so far there has been no change in its plan to complete the evacuation operation by the end of the month in Afghanistan and that it intends to withdraw US troops by then.

The representative of the US Department of Defense, John Kirby, noted that the US military believes it has the ability to remove all Americans who want to leave Afghanistan by August 31st.

“Our ultimate goal is still at the end of the month,” Kirby said, noting that the Pentagon may need additional bases to house displaced people from Afghanistan, according to Reuters.

Moreover, the Joe Biden has agreed with the Pentagon’s recommendation to meet the deadline for withdrawing from Afghanistan, a government official told the same news network today.

The Pentagon was set up yesterday based on concerns about them security risks US forces are on the run, the official said.

On the other hand, the American president asked the Pentagon to draw up emergency plans to extend the stay of American forces if this is deemed necessary, as the official added who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Washington emphasizes to Taliban – who appeared opposite with any extension of operations beyond August – that the US withdrawal by the 31st of August depends from the cooperation of the Islamic organization in facilitating the evacuation operations, the government source concluded.
