Afghanistan: President Ghani leaves Kabul for Tajikistan

Developments in Afghanistan are rapid now, after the seemingly complete domination of the Taliban.

The latest development is the ouster of Kabul by the president Ashraf Ghani who left for Tajikistan as reported today by a high-ranking official of the Afghan Ministry of Interior.

Asked to comment, the presidential office said it “could not say anything about Ashraf Ghani’s move for security reasons.”

A Taliban spokesman said the group was in control of Ghani.

The staff of the Italian embassy in Kabul will return to Rome today, it was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

A military plane will take off from Kabul at 9.30pm local time, a spokeswoman said, adding that most of the embassy staff left the building yesterday and are currently at the airport.

The spokeswoman declined to say whether the ambassador would be among those leaving on tonight’s flight, saying it was too early to say whether Italy had closed its embassy.

At the same time, the staff of the Swedish embassy in the Afghan capital will leave immediately and the evacuation operation is expected to be completed tomorrow, Monday, said today Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde.

“All staff will be gone by tomorrow,” Linde told a news conference.

“The Swedish Immigration Authority is working to bring back local workers.”
