The Taliban could isolate its capital Afghanistan, the Kabul, in 30 days and possibly to occupy it in 90 days, a US defense official told Reuters today (11/8), citing an assessment by the US intelligence services.
The Taliban fighters took control of the capitals of eight provinces in six days, with the pace of their advance surprising American officials, as broadcast by APE-MPE.
Taliban forces now control 65% of Afghanistan and have occupied, or are threatening to do so, the capitals of 11 provinces, a senior EU official said on Tuesday.
Until last month, US intelligence estimates warned that the Afghan government could fall within six months.
The US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: The new estimate follows the Taliban’s rapid gains across Afghanistan.
“However, this is not a premeditated result,” the official added, adding that Afghan security forces could reverse the momentum with more resistance to the militant group.
It was not immediately clear whether this was a general assumption made by intelligence officials or whether each service had its own point of view, which is not uncommon.
US President Joe Biden said yesterday that he did not regret his decision to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan after more than 20 years in the country.
The United States has withdrawn virtually all of its troops from Afghanistan, except those remaining to protect the US embassy and airport in Kabul, with the military mission expected to end on August 31.
