THE European Union announced today that the arrival of Taliban in Kabul has “made protection even more urgent” from possible retaliation against its Afghan staff, which it is trying to keep safe.
“The situation is very urgent, we take it very seriously and we continue to work together, with the EU Member States, to find quick solutions for them (the Afghan staff) and for their safety. “We are in close contact with the Member States to maximize the possibilities for our local staff and their dependents to move to safety,” said an EU spokesman.
“We understand that negotiations are under way for a transition system and we will react according to the outcome,” said Josep Borrell, a spokesman for the European Union, adding that “even more massacres and casualties must be avoided.”
The Taliban are preparing to regain power following a lightning military strike that crushed the Afghan armed forces as foreign forces (the United States and NATO) completed their withdrawal from the country.
European countries with a presence in Afghanistan and the United States today continued to evacuate their citizens and local staff.
The EU Delegation to Afghanistan cannot issue entry visas and it is up to the 27 Member States of the Union to receive their Afghan staff on their territory.
