Afghanistan: The last British military flight departs from Kabul

The last British military personnel transfer flight from Afghanistan departed from Kabul airport, the British Ministry of Defense announced late Saturday night.

“The last flight carrying UK Armed Forces personnel departed from Kabul. “We thank all those who served so bravely under enormous pressure and in horrific conditions to safely evacuate the most vulnerable civilians,” the defense ministry said on Twitter.

Earlier in the day, Britain’s ambassador to Afghanistan, Lori Bristow, said Britain had evacuated nearly 15,000 Britons and Afghans from Kabul over the past two weeks. According to Bristow, nearly 1,000 military personnel, as well as diplomatic and civilian personnel, worked on the evacuation operation.

The United Kingdom originally planned to complete its evacuation mission from Afghanistan by Friday night.

The first plane carrying UK nationals and embassy staff from Afghanistan to Britain landed in London on 16 August.
