Afghanistan, the photos of Vanity Fair for the Italian Red Cross

«The spontaneous partnership born in the field in Avezzano between the Red Cross and Vanity Fair, who wanted to give us some beautiful shots of Stefano Schirato to support the fundraising of the CRI in favor of the Afghan people, is the proof of how much the strength of humanity in action of our volunteers is a source of inspiration. This is testified by these iconic stolen hugs which, more than any word, give meaning to our daily actions ».

With these words Francesco Rocca, president of the Italian Red Cross, presents the collaboration born in the field, in the Avezzano tent city set up in a very short time to respond to the Afghan emergency, between Vanity Fair and the Italian Red Cross.

«Every woman or man of the Red Cross knows well that when he puts himself at the service of the most vulnerable he does not give, but above all he receives. This sharing could not have been better represented », continues Francesco Rocca.

In addition to political instability, there are, in fact, one of the worst droughts ever, a serious shortage of food, an inadequate health system and the Covid-19 pandemic. With no food or income, tens of thousands of families have left their homes, seeking food and shelter in urban areas, and many of these families are forced to live in relief centers and camps. «The hope is that such works can encourage many to donate for a people who, at this moment, are experiencing an unprecedented crisis in their own country ”.

With the release of the issue dedicated to Afghan women, Vanity Fair launched the hashtag #noisiamoaccoglienza to tell, through all digital channels, also the great Italian response to the emergency. “Because soon, we know, the usual ones will come to say that Italians come first, that there is still the pandemic, that people are losing their jobs, that there are poor here too,” writes Simone Marchetti, director by Vanity Fair Italia. “It’s all true, it’s all understandable. But it is even more true and even more understandable that there is a face of Italy that looking at the face we put on the cover can only ask: what can I do? How can I contribute? It is in that face that we recognize ourselves. It is in that spirit that we can truly call ourselves Italians».
