The University together with the Ministry of Interior and Defense is looking for a way to bring these people to Italy. There director Antonella Polimeni sent the ministries the list of 118 pre-selected Afghan students for whom immediate transport by airlift was requested, but curricula of other previously not accepted students are also being re-evaluated. For them it could be a way of salvation.
In particular for girls for whom restrictions are already in place starting from separate lessons. “We are closely monitoring, in conjunction with the other ministries, the situation of all Afghan students enrolled in our universities, conservatories and academies. We are putting in place all the tools and efforts to hope to be able to welcome them all to Italy soon. In the meantime, we have collected the willingness to welcome Afghan students and researchers already present among the first refugees who arrived in Italy ”, added the minister of the University, Cristina Messa.
The 81 Afghan students were already on the list of the Ministry of Defense for the transfer to Italy, but, due to theattack three days ago they were unable to enter the airport. These women between the ages of 19 and 22 are those most at risk, especially those who come from Herat. They could face reprisals if they come back.
One of the girls wrote an appeal letter. «I can no longer eat and worry for the future does not leave me a moment of serenity. The streets of my city are empty and cold, all the girls have run away or are afraid to leave the house, we are all worried but we are waiting for a miracle that will at least help us to leave this dangerous country and offer us an opportunity to survive and study and make our dreams come true. We ask the Italian government and the international community to collaborate with us students from Afghanistan, we are a vulnerable social group in this battered country and we urgently need help to save our lives from this situation of immediate danger. We need hope to continue life! ».
