Only 27% of health professionals in Africa are fully vaccinated, reported the department of the World Health Organization (WHO) of the continent.
The low rate of immunization against the virus leaves most frontline workers unprotected during the pandemic, according to the WHO analysis.
The survey carried out with data from 25 African countries indicates that 1.3 million health professionals have been fully vaccinated since March of this year. Six countries have 90% complete immunization among the group, while nine others do not even reach 40%.
The Organization denounces the contrast with the richest countries in the world, where more than 80% of workers in the area are already fully vaccinated against the coronavirus.
“Most are still without vaccines and remain dangerously exposed to severe Covid-19 infection. Unless our front-line employees gain full protection, we risk suffering a setback in efforts to contain this disease,” said Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO director on the continent.
Concern about new variant
After declining over the past four months, southern African countries reported a 48% increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in the past week.
The new infection may be related to the B.1.1.529 variant. initially identified in Botswana and already reported in South Africa. The strain worries scientists because it has many mutations that give advantages to the virus.
