African-American executed in US after white jury convicted of murder – Claimed self-defense

An African-American man convicted in South Carolina by an all-white jury of the 1999 murder of a cashier – a killing he said he committed in self-defense – was executed on Friday, US media reported. The execution of Richard Moore, 59, is the 21st in the US since the beginning of this year. Almost all were carried out by lethal injection of chemicals, with the exception of two in Alabama (south), which were carried out by nitrogen inhalation, a method denounced by the UN as a form of “torture”. Richard Moore was sentenced to death in 2021 for the murder of James Mahoney, cashier of a small supermarket, which he had entered unarmed.
