African Elephant Pupy arrives at the sanctuary in Mato Grosso

The African Elephant Pupy arrived this Friday (18), to the Sanctuary of Elephant Brazil (SEB), in Chapada dos Guimarães, in Mato Grosso. Elephanta came from EcoParque de Buenos Aires, on a 2,700 -kilometer trip, made in five days. Pupy left Argentina on Monday (14).

Arriving at the new home, Puppy took 9am to leave the transport box. According to the sanctuary, this is part of the adaptation of the animal and each elephant has its time. “Seb values a lot for the well -being of the animal and everything is done in their time,” says the sanctuary.

Pupy inaugurated the new habitat for SEB African females, which has an area of 51,000 square meters, with about five hectares, divided into five areas. “Now Elephant Pupy will have a chance to live in a spacious and natural environment, with the company of other elephants,” said the Seb.

For now Pupy is alone waiting for a new elephant of the same species, Kenya, who will soon come to the sanctuary. Both will divide the same habitat. With a population of only 40,000 worldwide, the species is considered endangered.

The other residents of the sanctuary are Asian elephants, named like Rana, Maia, Mara, Bambi and Guillermina. However, they cannot be in the same space as pupy for behavioral reasons. “This also happens in nature,” says SEB.

Puppy is 36 years old and was born at Kruger National Park in South Africa. She was taken to the Buenos Aires zoo, where she lived for 30 years alongside Elephant Kuky, who died in October 2024.

Another elephant was also transferred from the EcoParque de Buenos Aires in May 2020. Transfers mark the end of the captivity of elephants in Argentina.

The Buenos Aires Zoo is in the process of transformation to become a native wildlife conservation center. Since 2016, the zoo has been dedicated to relocating its animals to sanctuaries and reserves, prioritizing animal welfare and conservation of native species.
