The Ministry of Transport gave the “green light” for the re-opening of Epitalio Airport in Pyrgos Ilias.

The airport of Epitalion is located at a distance of approximately 11 kilometers from the city of Pyrgos and next to the main road connecting the area with the archaeological sites of Ancient Olympia, Epicurean Apollo and Ancient Elis.

This particular airport operated in 1975 on an area next to the dried-up lake of Agulinitsa, for some time it hosted “Pezetel” type firefighting aircraft, but it stopped operating in 2010.

The Ministry of Transport, by its decision, granted the site of the former state airport of Epitalia a license for light aircraft.

According to the decision, the general control of the operational status of the landing field is the responsibility of the APA, with the Authority publishing the operational data of this decision in the Aeronautical Information Manual of Greece (AIP GREECE), as well as any change in the operational status of the heliport (via NOTAM release).

Apart from the local bodies, the Pyrgos Aero Club played a key role in the efforts made to reopen the airport.

According to officials of local organizations, the reopening of the airport will also bring tourism benefits to the wider region, as instructors and trainee pilots from abroad will be able to come to it.
