Skype’s shutdown occurs 14 years after Microsoft bought the service for $ 8.5 billion ($ 49,709,700,000.00), marking the largest acquisition of the company at the time. Microsoft has integrated the service on its other products, such as Office and Windows Phone mobile operating service.
The popularity of Skype has decreased in recent years, despite a pandemic leap that has raised other competing products, including Zoom, Google Meet and Cisco Webex. Skype also faced increasing competition in the last and a half decade of applications such as Apple’s facetime and goal WhatsApp. In addition, Microsoft has been heavily invested in Teams, which offers many of the same services.
Skype was released in 2003 in Estonia, and quickly took it as a way to make free calls to the world, a remarkable advantage considering that international calls in traditional telephones used to be expensive. The service quickly became popular, leading Ebay to buy it in 2005 for $ 2.6 billion. However, the partnership did not work, and Ebay sold its 65% stake in Skype to an investor group for $ 1.9 billion in 2009 before Microsoft bought it in 2011.
