The death of a nine-month-old baby from whooping cough in Teixeira de Freitas, in the extreme south of Bahia, led the City Hall to issue an epidemiological alert. Whooping cough is transmitted by respiratory droplets and is characterized by a strong and uncontrollable cough, which can cause breathing difficulties and vomiting. Treatment is carried out with antibiotics, but vaccination remains the main measure to control the disease.
