After 5 years without records, Bahia confirms death of 9-month-old baby from whooping cough

The death of a nine-month-old baby from whooping cough in Teixeira de Freitas, in the extreme south of Bahia, led the City Hall to issue an epidemiological alert. The death, which occurred on the 12th, was the first recorded in the state for this infection in five years according to the State Health Department (Sesab).

The recommendation was released by the Municipal Health Department this Wednesday (20) on social media.

In addition to the fatal case, a two-month-old child was diagnosed with the disease in September in Teixeira de Freitas, which has worried local authorities.

In response, the Department of Health intensified awareness and vaccination actions in the municipality and advises the population to seek medical attention if they have a persistent cough or have had contact with people with suspicious symptoms.

Whooping cough

Whooping cough is an infectious disease that affects the respiratory system and can cause serious complications, which can lead to death in extreme cases. The main form of prevention is vaccination, available in Basic Health Units (UBS) in Teixeira de Freitas and other regions of the country.

According to the Ministry of Health, children up to 6 years, 11 months and 29 days old must be vaccinated against pertussis. The Unified Health System (SUS) also offers the vaccine to pregnant women and health professionals who work in maternity wards and neonatal hospitalization units, caring for newborns and children under one year of age.

Whooping cough is transmitted by respiratory droplets and is characterized by a strong and uncontrollable cough, which can cause breathing difficulties and vomiting. Treatment is carried out with antibiotics, but vaccination remains the main measure to control the disease.
